Special occasions are synonymous with gift boxes. And those boxes need to stand out so the receiver can immediately see who’s sent them. Click here to discover how a gift box became an effective packaging case.

The challenge

Closed gift box and product

We needed to create a gift box that would make the recipient automatically think of the sender.  Us. And to do it, we had to ask some serious questions - like what does Antalis stands for and how best to show it via something as simple as a gift box? The box would undoubtedly have to include our DNA (via our colours and logo), but what else could we do to create something really singular?

The process

Wine packaging gift box exploration process

A lot of people got involved – a collaboration across the entire organisation, in fact, especially our Packaging Design Center in Vejle, Denmark.

Choosing the type of material—cardboard—was the easy part. It was a robust material that would allow us to maintain the feeling of a small box holding something special. Agreeing upon the design and printing on the cardboard, however, was a more iterative process -  proof that the creative process is rarely straightforward.

After much deliberation, our conclusion was this: the gift box should be made from a single piece of corrugated cardboard, which, with the right cuts, could be folded into the form of a box. We carefully measured the cardboard and adapted its cut-outs so that the wine bottles would lie safely, without any movement during transit. We then fitted the gift box with two straps at the top and bottom so as not to obscure the important parts of the print.

Once the final print was approved by everyone, our Product Specialist Designer, John Rasmussen, started the testing and selection process of both the corrugated cardboard and the print quality. A series of trials allowed us to find the right balance between cardboard thickness and print quality.

Our team input

Not everyone may be as fascinated and passionate about corrugated cardboard as we are at Antalis, but we chose to show as much of the brown corrugated cardboard as possible, as a reference to one of our key products: industrial packaging.

Of course, a lot of thought went into the practical side of securing the Innocenti wine bottles, so they wouldn’t end up as a big red puddles on the recipient's floor. Nevertheless, we chose not to use glue to bind the layers of corrugated cardboard together, preferring instead to allow the gift box to unfold in one go, showcasing how useful a single piece of corrugated cardboard can be with good, well-thought-through design. A brilliant gift idea and a unique, inspirational wrapping experience!
