Is Paper Packaging one of the sustainable solutions we need? It's both eco-responsible and highly effective. Find out why it is shaping the future of packaging.
For centuries, paper has played a central role in packaging thanks to its versatility, natural origin, and ability to meet a wide range of needs.
As sustainability becomes a growing priority across industries, businesses are increasingly turning to paper as a responsible and efficient solution. Alongside emerging alternatives such as bamboo or seaweed, paper stands out for its mature recycling infrastructure, circular potential, and proven performance.
As businesses shift toward sustainability, paper emerges as a natural, high-performance, and eco-responsible packaging solution.
The eco-responsible advantages of paper are many:

Paper packaging in many cases can be optimized to reduce material needs and improve energy and resource management. In less than two months, Antalis Packaging reengineered a client’s shipping cartons, replacing a double-walled carton with a single-walled substitute with a heavier flute. The alternative had equal protection performance but used 33% less packaging material and resulted in a reduction of 21 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year3.

— John Garner, Packaging Category Director at Antalis.
The role of packaging in protecting products and limiting damage throughout the distribution process is essential. In the age of ecommerce and greater volumes of product shipments, paper and cardboard are crucial packaging materials that protect products, improve logistics efficiency and preserve high quality customer experiences.
From smaller packaging for food and beverage products up to strapping that secures and protects product pallets in transit, paper is an amazingly versatile material. It can be used in virtually all stages of the packaging and logistics process.
Consider several recent innovations:
Paper strapping, a recyclable and biodegradable solution for securing pallets in transit, offers a sustainable alternative5. For example, Antalis Packaging has added this innovation to its ecommerce portfolio; it has a breaking strain of 70 kg.A concrete example of paper packaging in action: In the dairy industry, some brands are now using paper-based packaging for yoghurts as an alternative to plastic. This innovation, recently highlighted by Guyenne Papier x LFI Emballages a, demonstrates how paper can be adapted to meet strict food safety requirements while significantly reducing plastic waste.
People like paper. They understand that it is produced from natural, renewable resources, that it is easily recycled and has a more circular, sustainable profile than plastic. Sustainability is not just a catchword. It is increasingly front of mind for both consumers and regulators. In a study of consumer packaging perceptions by Pro Carton, 61% of European consumers said that the environmental impact of a product’s packaging affects their decision-making process. Three quarters of them said they would pay more for a product that had sustainable packaging6.
Companies and brands that adopt paper packaging are making a positive connection with environmentally conscious customers. They are also getting out ahead of environmental regulations that are likely to become more stringent in the future. Companies that use sustainable packaging alternatives like paper will endear themselves to consumers and prepare themselves for the future.
It is time for businesses to take advantage of it to reduce their environmental impact and stay ahead of regulatory changes.
The paper industry is becoming one of the most sustainable industries in Europe. It has reduced its carbon emissions by 29% since 2010 and increased the share of renewable energy it consumes to 62%, according to the Confederation of European Paper Industries statistics7. It also continues to innovate with paper production, creating stronger, more attractive and more environmentally responsible products for packaging applications.
Paper has emerged as a sustainable, high-performance material that meets both environmental standards and consumer expectations.
