Designed by Honest Studio and printed by Taylor Brothers, Bristol, the Dyson Cancer Centre's celebration is a commemorative book to celebrate the amazing support of those who made the new Dyson Cancer Centre possible. Printed on Olin Design, the book has a warm and tactile feel, fitting with hospital charity RUHX's brand identity and the heartfelt message within its pages.

The project

RUHX is the official NHS charity of the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. The recently built Dyson Cancer Centre at the RUH Bath first opened doors to patients thanks to RUHX, who together with supporters, raised £10 million towards this cancer services hub. To show sincere appreciation and recognise this life-changing achievement, the Dyson Cancer Centre book was created. Taking on board this honourable creative challenge, Taylor Brothers, Honest Studio and RUHX worked together to develop artwork sympathetic to the cause.

A team of three key players: Simon Thexton (RUHX) Dan Weeks (Honest Studio), and Shaun Cooper (Taylor Brothers) put their heads together to talk through creative concepts. Deciding upon ideas, size, format, materials and finishes – within the RUHX budget – proved an enjoyable challenge, with the mock-ups creating excitement for the next steps!

As for the design of the book, the pages are inspired by the Dyson Cancer Centre itself. The Honest Studio team had also been part of the centre signage project and, as such, had developed a suite of animal iconography to complement the nature-themed interior design plan.

This iconography was then utilised to continue the visual narrative throughout the book's design. The book focuses on the campaign, construction, creativity, commitment and commemoration.

The paper and printing

Knowing paper choice was key, the team test printed various paper samples, with a keen eye for colour reproduction, which was specifically important as there were to be many images throughout the book. Olin Design proved flawless in performance and was unanimously agreed upon as the best fit for the book.

“Olin looked great on the solids, the CMYK and the special Pms.”Shaun Cooper, Sales Director at Taylor Brothers

Olin Design Regular Bright White was chosen as the most suited substrate, with 170gsm used for the pages and 350gsm for the covers. The 80-page, landscape book was lovingly printed by carbon-balanced printer Taylor Brothers, on their Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75.

“It was an honour to print this book, not only is it a true celebration of human kindness and generosity, it highlights the progress and achievements possible when we join together and give full support to a good cause.
We are delighted at the result and the book’s overall warm and emotive feel. The paper printed beautifully, with fantastic colour reproduction for the photos. We’ll be sure to use Olin Design for future projects that need a sincere and tasteful look and feel.”

The result

The commemorative book’s pages are filled with thanks to the thousands of people who helped make a positive impact and bring the new Dyson Cancer Centre to life. There are many photographs of their efforts; from treks, skydives, firewalks and race days, to corporate support and personal challenges, each of which recognises and celebrates their accomplishments.
2000 books were published, with copies provided to major donors to honour their contribution towards providing this facility for the community - today and in the future.

"This was an incredibly special print project for us. Over 10 years, many special donors helped raise £10 million towards the new Dyson Cancer Centre. We chose to use these high-quality materials, as it needed to be a lasting quality book that did justice to the new centre, which was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in September 2024.”
