The landmark Winter Gardens Blackpool has recently upgraded glazing across its Conference Centre with a bespoke privacy solution designed for both visual impact and practicality. The project brief called for greater privacy across multi-level glass panels and escalator sections, while maintaining daylight and preserving the venue’s distinctive, industrial-inspired interior, characterised by exposed brickwork and clean modern lines.

Links Signs and Graphics were appointed to deliver the solution, drawing on their long-standing relationship with the venue. The initial concept explored a range of tinted films in varying opacities. While these options did improve privacy, they introduced a mirrored appearance that conflicted with the raw, contemporary aesthetic of the building.

A printed frosted film with a custom pattern was also considered. However, in such a high traffic area, the likelihood of future scuffing and damage raised concerns around consistent colour and pattern matching for replacement panels over time.

Recalling a previous discussion with Antalis, the Links team revisited patterned frosted films available off the roll. Coala Window Decor Pattern Knit was quickly identified as the ideal product. Its subtle pattern echoes the geometry of the escalators, delivering privacy where required while still allowing views of the exposed brickwork and retaining natural light throughout the space.

The result is a cohesive visual treatment that supports both function and design intent. The film delivers a refined, softly diffused look, enhancing guest comfort without imposing on the architectural character of the Conference Centre.

Installation was completed by a four-man team over two days. Detailed site surveys ahead of time allowed all films to be pre-cut, ensuring accurate alignment and an efficient, disruption free installation across complex areas, including multi-level glazing and escalator runs.

“Winter Gardens Blackpool has worked with Links Signs and Graphics for a number of years, and we have built a strong and trusted working relationship. When we needed privacy, frosting installed across the Conference Centre glazing, including complex multi-level areas and escalator sections, they were the natural choice. The brief required a careful balance between improving privacy and guest comfort while respecting the architecture of the building, and the finished result achieves exactly that. The frosting enhances the visitor experience without detracting from the character of the space."Phil Jackson of Winter Gardens Blackpool

For large format print specifiers and installers, the project demonstrates how Coala Window Decor Pattern Knit can be used to meet privacy, design and maintenance requirements in demanding public environments, while supporting efficient installation and future panel replacement.
