Being more environmentally friendly by introducing a plastic-free alternative to their packaging, ensuring excellent thermal insulation and optimising cost-efficiency… This is the challenge that Antalis rose to, helping their client achieve their goals with brio.

Being more environmentally friendly by introducing a plastic-free alternative to their packaging, ensuring excellent thermal insulation and optimising cost-efficiency… This is the challenge that Antalis rose to, helping their client achieve their goals with brio.

The client's challenge

Our client, an online distributor of high quality Spanish foods, used to use sealable aluminum-plastic bags, packed in cardboard. However, this packaging system generated a substantial amount of waste (primarily plastic). Prompted by environmental concerns, they decided to eliminate the use of plastic in their packaging, yet they still needed to ensure a consistency of temperature for at least 24h, the maximum journey time from the warehouse to the customer.

The Antalis solution

Antalis, with its packaging & environmental expertise, took all factors into account and concluded that the client should adopt the WrapPak Protector system from Ranpak. It is a versatile, on-demand system that’s 100% sustainable and complies with the client's constraints. With this solution, multi-layered paper can be transformed into box lining, wrapping and thermal insulation, as well as block and bracing. Additionally, for ranges with bottles and jars, Antalis proposed the FillPak TT system, converting Kraft paper into eco-friendly void fill (when combined with double-walled corrugated boxes) and Kraft paper tape, creating the ultimate plastic-free packaging for chilled food.

The process

  • 1. Exploration: Antalis's Stuart Bates, an expert in in-box solutions, automation, and void reduction, visited the client's site to get a comprehensive understanding of their business, including their current packaging and packing process.

  • 2. Proposition: Antalis recommended the WrapPak Protector system from Ranpak (a renowned producer of 100% sustainable, paper-based packaging) to fulfil the client's objective of eliminating plastic usage in their packaging. With this eco-friendly solution, the client could not only reduce their environmental impact, but also ensure their products' safety and freshness during transportation (it can cater for ambient, chilled and frozen food supply chains).

  • 3. Test: Antalis conducted extensive two-month trials on the packaging to ensure the food's freshness for 24 hours. These trials involved subjecting the packages to various conditions, including different temperatures and humidity levels. The rigorous testing by Antalis guaranteed the packaging's ability to maintain freshness under diverse conditions.

  • 4. Implementation: after successfully completing the trials, the client has now fully embraced and implemented the Antalis proposal.

"With thermal packaging, the most important consideration is that it keeps the item at the required temperature within the delivery timeframe. With the Ranpak WrapPak product, we not only tick this box, but because it’s an on-demand system it also means that there are no bulky packaging materials to store. Plus, because the product is simply made of layers of paper, it is easy to recycle once the delivery has been made."
