How a beauty company eliminated its use of plastic

Plastic reduction is a key focus for many brands these days. So when a global beauty company turned to Antalis to remove all plastics from its transport packaging supply chain, we were delighted to help them find a more sustainable solution.

Plastic reduction is a key focus for many brands these days. So when a global beauty company turned to Antalis to remove all plastics from its transport packaging supply chain, we were delighted to help them find a more sustainable solution.

The client's challenge

In line with their sustainability targets, the client wanted to remove all plastics from their transit packaging supply-chain and use FSC®-certified products wherever possible.

The Antalis solution

Using a clear framework, the Antalis packaging team carried out multiple tests to see what would best replace the plastic air bags the client had been using up until now. The Antalis solution was Ranpak Fillpak TT, a flexible, portable void-fill system that transforms single-ply, fanfold Kraft paper into protective fill.

FillPak TT is a table-top converter that quickly transforms single-ply, fanfold Kraft paper into protective void fill.

The process

  • 1. Exploration: the Antalis team visited the client to gain a clear understanding of the scale and scope of the requirement. To provide in-transit protection, goods were being packed into cardboard cartons with plastic air bags used to fill voids. The plastic bags were stored in two large hoppers located above the packers’ workstations. The cartons were sealed with machine tape.

  • 2. Proposition: the Antalis machinery team proposed a trial installation of a Fillpak TT production unit to be operated alongside the existing plastic-based system, so that the client could compare the two methods. To further support the client’s sustainability goals, Antalis recommended switching to FSC®-certified cartons and using a paper tape to seal them.

  • 3. Test: following a five-week trial period the client was delighted with the Fillpak TT unit.

  • 4. Implementation: the client purchased four Fillpak TT units and implemented the recommended changes to its tape and cartons. Antalis keeps the client’s packaging materials in stock, delivering it to them on a just-in-time basis.

This was a very satisfying project to be involved in and the client was delighted with the outcome.

The client’s goal was to quickly eliminate plastics from their transit packaging. Then because we were able to quickly run the trial and then both install the machines and get supplies of the paper tape and new FSC®-certified boxes, they were able to meet their objective in good time. In addition, the removal of the large hoppers for the plastic air sacs has freed up space and allowed more light into the packing area, making it a much pleasanter environment to work in.
